This week's speaker at Rotary was our own John Fisher who gave his re-classification speech. Dr. John Fisher, D.D.S. is a graduate of Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. Upon completing his military service, he moved on to teach fixed prosthetics at Boston University School of Dentistry and at the same time was beginning his dental practice in Salem, where he has practiced for 43 years. He was very excited that Army beat Navy this past weekend in Foxboro, and even went to the game. Dr. Fisher explained that he views dentistry as really oral health and important to the general health of the human body. He said you don't have to floss between all of your teeth, only the ones you want to keep.
Along with several other props, Dr. Fisher showed off his old Rotary badge which he considered fancier than the current ones while also harder to read. He recalled the times when Rotary was all male and how he met his wife, Joy. They've been married for 55 years now and have two daughters. He's very proud of their accomplishments. He accidently ended up in Salem on his way to Rockport, breaking into the closed House of the Seven Gables that day (Take notes, Dakota) before exploring other parts of the city. He decided he would like to try living here after getting the approval from his wife. They have been married for 55 years for a reason! They bought 18 Hawthorne Boulevard where he opened his practice.
Dr. Fisher joined Rotary in 1977 as one of the youngest members. He considered it more of a social club at the time. He did recognize the honor of joining the club, despite the fact that the primary source of fundraising was fruit cakes. While president of the club in the early 1980s John did diversify the fundraising efforts, including collecting money for him to stand on his head and drink a beer. They had stricter fines and Rotary trivia at the time. He recalled social events like ski trips, a softball team, and trips to the Golden Banana. Dr. Fisher considered Rotary more of a family organization too, often bringing his wife and daughters (presumably not to the Golden Banana).
Dr. Fisher has been active in the community having served as President and Board member of the Salem YMCA for 25 years. He is a member and past President of the Salem Rotary Club. Dr. Fisher is a Board member of Catholic Charities North and an advisory member of the Oral Health Committee of the Massachusetts Medical Society. He has served as Trustee and President of the Massachusetts Dental Society and currently chairs the Better Oral Health for Massachusetts Coalition. He lectures on community water fluoridation throughout the Commonwealth and is the State Representative for Oral Health 2020.
Additionally, he sits on the advisory board for Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene. He is a boating enthusiast and past Commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club. He continues to enjoy skiing, tennis, and golf.
As the District representative on the Council of Legislation (COL) I wanted to let you know the results of the recent meeting. Twenty six resolutions were transmitted to the Council and 7 resolutions were adopted, all of which were recommendations to the RI Board. The RI Board will consider these items at its upcoming meetings. The Report of Actions can be viewed here.

ROTARIAN NEWS
Kristen Armstrong doesn't make good decisions. She decided to put her dirty floor mats in the truck bed before going through the car wash. The floor mats were thrown from the vehicle during the drying process. They were clean, though they were still wet. She decided to dry them by keeping the car on, only to forget she had done so. Perhaps it is time for a segment in the Spoke called "Life Lessons from Kristen Armstrong".
Claire Kallelis was excited to see that Claire Marie Gauthier was included in a cookbook distributed by John Fisher. She was also a part of the staff at the Hawthorne and served Rotary in the past. She also asked for thoughts and prayers as Claire was undergoing medical procedures.
