EN-ROADS CLIMATE

SOLUTIONS SIMULATOR

ROB BONNEY

This week at Rotary, Rotarians heard from Rob Bonney as our guest speaker.  The subject was an overview of the EN-Roads Climate Solutions Simulator.  Rob, a local Salem resident recently retired and became involved with the development of an amazing North Shore environmental group called the Citizens Client Lobby.  This is a non-partisan institution which focuses on national policy of climate solutions.  Volunteers meet once per month in Beverly and all are welcome.  The Climate Solutions Simulator is gaining traction - for example - Bloomberg has shared it, and there have been more than 7,300 events to showcase the tool in 139 countries, with over 200,000 participants listening in.

The Climate Solutions Simulator is live and can be accessed here. It helps officials and volunteers to prioritize their initiatives to decrease global temperature rise  - in essence, to understand which policies actioned that will provide the most "bang for their buck" around the globe and in our own geographies.  Some of the highlights about the structure of this tool include:
  • At the current run rate, a 6 degrees F temperature increase is expected by the end of this century which creates a very bad scenario around the globe.  There is a goal to reduce this rise to below 2.2 degrees C instead.
  • The Simulator models a number of metrics or indicators which, when shifted, can have a significant impact in improving (or worsening) this trajectory.
  • With feedback from the Rotary audience, Rob programmed the model to show how certain actions can reduce the temperature according to the Simulator's modeling if implemented.
  • The net takeaway is that while it is true that any work to move the needle on temperature rise and reduction must be global in scope, there is a LOT that we all can do to preserve a liveable world. An example of how global action can create change is the problems of the eroding ozone layer several years ago, which is now almost completely remedied.
  • We also learned a new word today - "exajoules".  We dare anyone to admit that they have ever heard that word before! (ps it is a unit of energy, particularly in use for measuring energy consumption. Who knew!)
Rob mentioned that he is available to present the Simulator to schools and other groups.

Salem Rotary President Jen Close kicked off the luncheon discussion by commending the 2024 Auction team for a great Spring Auction. The numbers are being crunched and the full tally of the funds raised will be ready next week.  A debrief of the event will be made available to everyone for feedback and learnings to help us with next year's Spring event.

Dutch Drinks will be taking place this coming Friday, the 5th at the All Souls lounge
