This week at the Salem Rotary, our guest speaker was Salem Rotarian Gerrit Bradley, who shared a captivating video of his recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. Gerrit sifted through around 5,000 photographs to compile the presentation, which was made possible in part by his late mother's unused American Airlines miles. The video featured vibrant underwater footage of local fish and a thrilling exploration into a cave. Geographically, the Galapagos sit right on the equator, allowing Gerrit the rare opportunity to briefly swim with penguins.
He also showcased stunning photos of the unique plants and wildlife found on the islands, including the remarkable story of the Galapagos tortoise, which has made a remarkable recovery from the brink of extinction. Gerrit shared some memorable footage of the famous blue-footed boobies (stop giggling, Adria), as well as the less commonly seen red-footed boobies (seriously, stop it Adria), providing a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos.
