GERRIT BRADLEY

Salem Rotary

Gerrit to the Galapagos

This week at the Salem Rotary, our guest speaker was Salem Rotarian Gerrit Bradley, who shared a captivating video of his recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. Gerrit sifted through around 5,000 photographs to compile the presentation, which was made possible in part by his late mother's unused American Airlines miles. The video featured vibrant underwater footage of local fish and a thrilling exploration into a cave. Geographically, the Galapagos sit right on the equator, allowing Gerrit the rare opportunity to briefly swim with penguins.

He also showcased stunning photos of the unique plants and wildlife found on the islands, including the remarkable story of the Galapagos tortoise, which has made a remarkable recovery from the brink of extinction. Gerrit shared some memorable footage of the famous blue-footed boobies (stop giggling, Adria), as well as the less commonly seen red-footed boobies (seriously, stop it Adria), providing a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos.

News and notes from this week at the Salem Rotary:

  • Congratulations to JOHN WALSH  for 40 years as a Salem Rotarian!!

  • The calendars are out to print. Get ready to sell, sell, sell!

  • Dutch drinks was a smashing success. Thankfully no photos exist from the event.

Poll results for SATV.

1.  How would you rank the concept of a series of Rotarian promotional slots created for use on SATV?
92% of respondents considered this valuable or very valuable.

2. How would you prioritize the value of SATV in providing video coverage of Rotary or Rotarian members' local event as they happen to build awareness?
92% of respondents considered this valuable or very valuable.

3. How would you prioritize the value of a regular schedule of shows where Rotary members interview local business and organizations, including those operated by Rotarians as a means to build awareness and generate new members?
This was the least popular question, mostly due to the potential work involved in these types of shows. 38% of respondents saw almost no value in doing so and only 23% of respondents considered it very valuable.

Blood Drive

Join us on Monday, November 11 between 10 am and 3 pm at the Boston Yacht Club for a simple yet impactful act of kindness – donating blood. Remember, you or your loved ones may require this life-saving gift someday, so why not pay it forward now? It only takes around 15 minutes, and the Red Cross will ensure you're in good health with a quick temperature and blood pressure check. Plus, enjoy some delicious snacks and soak in a serene Harbor view while making a difference. Your donation could be someone's lifeline, so mark your calendar and be there to help save lives.  If you can’t donate then please help us by recruiting some friends, colleagues or family members.

And this Blood Drive is on Veteran’s Day! So it’s a special holiday to pay it forward to our service men and women…a unique opportunity to feel like you’re doing something!

The Blood Drive is sponsored by Marblehead Rotary and the BYC. Go to redcrossblood.org or use your phone camera to go directly to the Red Cross site with either the QR code in the poster below, click on the link or just call. Enter key word Marblehead or 01945 and select a time at the Boston Yacht Club.

Jokes of the Week:

Why don't leopards play hide and seek?
They're always spotted

What does the buffalo say to his son when he ran away?
Bison (bye son)

They can't all be winners. Actually, none of them are winners. The actual winner from a "notable" Salem Rotarian is:

Why does Ariel wear sea shells on her top in the Little Mermaid?
Because the B shells were too small and the D shells were too big.

Adria, you can giggle now.

ROTARY NEWS

Robert C. Wood Memorial Heroes Event Returns

Calling all Heroes! Save the date of Thursday, November 14, 2024, for the return of our Heroes Celebration.

As in past years, Clubs will nominate a person in their community who isn't always recognized for their extraordinary service to others.

Our event will be held at Danversport Yacht Club. Watch for more info to follow -- but be on the lookout for a deserving nominee.  I encourage each Club to honor a Hero in your community.

Let's celebrate some great people, be astonished by their contributions, and celebrate the Magic of our Rotary Foundation.

Michael McLaughlin nominated Tom Furey and described his biography as a "Mr. Salem" of sorts. According to Mike, Tom is very excited for the event.
