The Salem Rotary Club was delighted to welcome new member Jim Rose, whose journey to Salem—and to our club—is as rich and winding as a classic New England back road.
Born on th
e Fourth of July, Jim grew up in Connecticut, eventually graduating from Wilton High School. During his presentation, he treated the club to a quick (and entertaining) geography lesson on Connecticut, complete with insights into pre–I-95 travel patterns.
Jim went on to earn a degree in Economics from Boston University, spending his summers landscaping in New Canaan. After college, he moved to the Baltimore area for a job in insurance, but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit. What followed was a hands-on hustle: from washing dishes while job-hunting to selling copiers, Jim tried it all before landing a research role at CorpTech in Wellesley, where he eventually worked his way up to inside sales executive.
Along the way, he met Julie, who would become his wife. The couple moved to Salem in 1995, drawn by Julie’s ties to the North Shore. They bought a home, adopted a black lab named Chester, and quickly became part of the community. In Jim’s words, he failed puppy kindergarten—so Julie trained both the dog and the man. Thanks to Chester’s outgoing nature, the couple met many of their neighbors and laid the foundation for a long and meaningful connection to Salem.
Jim has served on the Board of the House of the Seven Gables and volunteered with Historic Salem, further deepening his commitment to the city he now calls home. He’s currently preparing to welcome a new black lab into the family—stay tuned for training updates.
We’re thrilled to have Jim in the club, especially since he already knows many members. His passion for community, history, and neighborly connection fits right in with our mission—and we’re looking forward to many more stories (and puppy pictures) ahead.

Congratulations to Rinus Oosthoek for his recent retirement. The Board of Directors voted to name the CTE Scholarships after him, so his name will forever be mispronounced!
Also, a huge congratulations to the Salem Pantry and the Salem Rotary Club for getting the District Grant approved. Finally!
