Maria Gudinas
Chief Development Officer
AgeSpan
This week at Rotary, we welcomed Maria Gudins, AgeSpan's Chief Development Officer. Through its multifaceted approach, AgeSpan demonstrates a deep commitment to enhancing the lives of seniors in the Greater Salem community. By providing essential services, protecting vulnerable individuals, and fostering independence, the organization plays a crucial role in supporting elderly residents.
AgeSpan: Supporting Seniors' Independence and Well-being in Greater Salem
AgeSpan, a nonprofit organization serving seniors in the Greater Salem area, is dedicated to helping elderly residents maintain their independence and quality of life. During a recent presentation to the Salem Rotary Club, Maria Gudinas, the organization's Chief Development Officer, shared insights into their comprehensive array of services designed to support seniors aged 60 and older.
Comprehensive Home Care Services
At the core of AgeSpan's mission is keeping seniors in their homes for as long as possible. The Home Care Department offers an expansive range of services, including personal care assistance, wanderer locator services, transportation support, and access to medical devices and supplies. They also provide home-delivered meals through their Meals on Wheels program, working closely with the Salem Council on Aging.
Protecting Vulnerable Seniors
AgeSpan takes senior protection seriously. Last year, the organization received thousands of calls regarding potential elder abuse and was involved in hundreds of investigations. Their commitment to senior welfare extends beyond immediate interventions, offering protective services to ensure the safety and well-being of elderly residents.
Innovative Support Programs
The organization has developed several innovative programs to support seniors:
Money Management Program: Guided by state guidelines, volunteers help seniors with budgetary tasks, from writing checks to planning rent payments.
Supportive Housing: On-site coordinators help seniors maintain independence in housing complexes, providing service coordination and referrals.
Family Caregiver Support: The program offers information, support, and referrals for those caring for loved ones.
SHINE Program: Assists seniors in navigating Medicare enrollment and selecting the most appropriate plans.
Power of Pets: A new initiative recognizing the health benefits of pet ownership, offering financial assistance for veterinary expenses to individuals 65 and over.
Community Involvement and Funding
AgeSpan relies heavily on federal and state government funding, but they continually seek additional resources to maintain and expand their programs. The organization actively recruits volunteers for various roles, including market and Meals on Wheels assistance, money management, and the ombudsman program.
Notably, the Salem Rotary Club has been invited to adopt a route and contribute to the organization's mission of supporting local seniors.
