This week at Salem Rotary, we had time to for fellowship and to gather as committees since we had no speaker. President Carolyn Shapiro put together a slideshow reviewing some of our recent successes as a Rotary club. The slideshow included photos of Alexander Falk's visit with his Cybertruck last week. Rotarians also volunteered at the Luau themed Senior Prom, which was a smashing success. Carolyn took a stroll by our plantings on Washington Street en route to the Cardboard Boat Regatta. Speaking of which, the Salem Rotary had a great boat according to Jen. It was named the Gingerly Rascal from Moby Dick. According to Jen, it was a solid boat that could have made it well beyond the three required races. Jen's muscles, however, could not. In related news, Good Witch's boat did not make it very far, sinking almost immediately. The House of the Seven Gables' boat made to look like a coffin kept capsizing, clearly looking for an early grave. In the end, two awards were given to Rotarian boats. The Promote the Boat paid Jen back for the costs of the boat construction. Overall, the winner was the Salem Partnership and Daddy's Money won the time trial.
We received a thank you note from Scholarship recipient Jacob. New rosters were passed out this week. Be sure to come by and get yours if you were unable to get one. We have sent a letter to Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick to be this year's parade's Grand Marshall. Stay tuned!
Wow, Saturday was a banner day for Salem Rotarians at the Cardboard Boat Regatta on Derby Beach! Some competing....Some cheering! Congrats to everyone who participated!

ROTARY NEWS
Purple Pigs for Polio
World Polio Day is just twelve weeks from now - 24 October 2024 ...what is your club doing to END POLIO NOW? Whether you're planning a plunge, pizza for polio or another fun activity to raise awareness of eradicating polio, let's get the word out! Perhaps you might want to share your creative ideas with our District Newsletter so that others may benefit and help make this the year that we eradicate Polio.
And if you are looking for ideas, the Marblehead Rotary Club has had great success with a rather simple idea: Purple Pigs for Polio! Each week Purple Piggy Banks adorn our luncheon tables, and Rotarians and guests are invited to feed them with spare pocket change and/or green, leafy bills. You would be surprised how much these pigs can consume! Last year alone, their bellies were filled with almost $4,000 from weekly feedings and Happy Dollars during the month of October. With the Gates Foundation, 2:1 match, that's almost $12,000 raised to continue our global polio eradication effort. If you're interested in Purple Piggy Banks for your club, Amazon links where you can find purple pigs in various sizes (we use the larger pigs on our tables) follow:
District Governor Tom is pleased to announce that we have secured the sponsorship for the next Rotaplast Mission to Cebu in the Philippines. We will be departing on March 8, 2025, and returning on March 23, 2025. Rotaplast is a Rotary adjacent organization, started and supported by Rotarians worldwide. Their mission is to alleviate the suffering of children with facial deformities in low-income countries through free corrective plastic surgeries (cleft lip and palate). This is a great opportunity for clubs to be part of an international service mission. We hope that all clubs will contribute to raising our goal of $85K. We also need volunteers to come with us. Contact PDG Terry Curran at TerryCurran7930@gmail.com or call at 617-501-3521 if you are interested or have any questions.
