This week at Rotary was another installment of our evening meeting series. Snacks were consumed and a great time was had by all.
Gerrit Bradley is the new chair of the Service Committee, and he let us know about updates to the picnic at the Plummer Home. They will be impacted by renovations going on at the property. August 10 is the likely date. A sign up will be passed around next week and we will have more details then.
International Committee is meeting next week after Rotary.
OUR SIGN IS IN THE GROUND
Bob Anthony somehow wrangled a bowl of fruit from the wonderful staff at the Hawthorne Hotel. He also got a bottle of root beer, but no ice cream. Rinus Oosthoek dropped a butter ball on the floor after commenting on Ryan Guilmartin's eating habits. No word on what became of the butter.
We were joined this week by Rotarian Robin McKee Williams, Sophia Cardona from the Real Pirates of Salem, and Nel Duijvesteijn.

ROTARIAN NEWS
Mike McLaughlin has safely returned from Japan. He travelled as part of a group 16 representatives from Salem to our sister city. Mike reported that we have a lot of friends there and that the people couldn't be more hospitable. He met the mayor and visited a couple of schools. He noted the lack of janitorial staff at the schools because the children were expected to clean up after themselves. In Yokohama he went to the CupNoodle Museum. Stay tuned for more details during his presentation early October.
Dakota Russell brought up a couple of upcoming events at the House of the Seven Gables. The first is the Fusion Fest which highlights the various cultures represented by students in the ESL and Citizenship classes at the House of the Seven Gables. The second is the Sips by the Sea. Tickets are available.
Jason Consalvo reminded us that we are sponsoring the Sips by the Sea event and have four tickets. Be sure to ask about them!
Joanne Scott announced that the Boys and Girls Club Summer Jam at the Salem Willows is coming up on Sunday. It's a free, fun family event. Festivities kick off at noon.
Kristen Armstrong let the club know about fraud which is rampant and wanted everyone to be aware of scams targeting older members of the community.
Gerrit Bradley travelled to New Hampshire and came back with a bird report. Liz did a great job getting his uncle's boat backed into the water. They saw five loons, which was "very nice!"
Rinus Oosthoek updated us on his friend who sent thanks to the Salem community for using her olive oil from Malaga, Spain at the recent Fete en Blanc event. Rinus has some in his basement if anyone wants any. He also made sure that Mark Shaw was still awake (he was).
Jen Close updated us on the upcoming Maritime Festival. Ashley Tina will be the first mate on the sinking boat.
Claire Kallelis admitted to making a mistake which resulted in the staff coming back to help us. Tip well, my friends!
