THIS WEEK AT ROTARY...
GAVIN SOFTIC
Principal
The Bates School

This week was the annual Amazing Shake competition at the Bates School. Students were initially judged at the school by visiting 13 stations, each with a unique challenges that forced students to demonstrate interpersonal skills. Students with the top results then came to Rotary where we were able to speak to them and judge their these skills as well. Principal Gavin Softic did give a brief history of the Amazing Shake and stated that the goal of the competition was to develop interpersonal skills. He also went out of his to thank Rotary, not just for setting aside time to judge students but also because several members had served as station judges at the Bates School.

The students who advanced beyond the Rotary "gauntlet" are:
  • Dior Stavros
  • Joan Mendez
  • Isabella Garcia
  • Lucy Gardner
  • Charlie Stensaurd
  • Alex Alvarez
  • Addisyn Millar
  • Olivia Reale
  • Baylee Nelson
  • Nina Buono
  • Elvis Lilly
Next week we will be celebrating Bob Anthony's 93rd birthday! Be sure to wear something green to next week's Rotary meeting. Carrot cake will be served at Bob's request. No word on root beer floats.
The four way test

John Fisher spoke about the Four Way Test without the use of a teleprompter. He was reminded of a trivia game that Rotarians used to play where one party would ask another about a Rotary fact. Not surprisingly, incorrect answers were met with a fine. The club has certainly changed! John also spoke about his father who had dozens of sayings about proper conduct, diligence, and so on. These sayings reflected the tenets of the Four Way Test. In some ways, John said his father was the epitome of the test itself. This is why John was so happy to join a group that focused on these important principles. Randy Burba is set to speak next week.

Rotary was able to negotiate four tickets to the Citizens Inn Gala and Auction which will be taking place on March 11 at Danversport. Joe Amico and Bruce Whear will be representing the Salem Rotary at the event.

ROTARIAN NEWS

  • John Fisher was happy to report that surgery for his daughter went well and that she said "hi" to the Salem Rotarians who know her.
  • Jason Consalvo recounted his harrowing story participating in the Polar Plunge. He also described his participation in the Amazing Shake at the Bates School where he was a judge. Students had to fire either Jason or Councilor Ty Hapworth. Ty got fired more often than not according to Jason, grain of salt and all.
  • Liz Bradt traveled south of Boston to a Trustees reservation where she went on a five mile walk.
  • Mike McLaughlin attended the Amazing Shake as a judge as well. He handed students a hairdryer who had to sell it back to him. The most common response was 50% off while a 2-for-1 special was the winner.
  • Joe Amico was excited to announce that Rotary International has selected its first female president for the next Rotary year.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statement

At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
