The Phoenix School children joined our meeting from their in-person instruction at Salem Willows and through remote learning via Zoom for their EarlyAct Officer Inauguration. Leslie Levesque introduced the students and then turned the ceremony over to Bruce Whear, who gave an overview of the partnership between Salem Rotary and the EarlyAct Club. Adria Duijvesteijn announced the election results and swore in the new officers by leading them through the Four-Way test as their oath of office. Each officer also delivered an extraordinary acceptance speech, inspiring all in attendance, including our guest speaker. This year’s EarlyAct leadership includes: President Emma; Vice President Charlie; Treasurer Maraya; Clerk Lucas and Head Committee Co-Charis Gordon and Arlo.
SPEAKER:
MIKE BLACK
Regional Recruiter for the Peace Corps
A former Peace Corps volunteer, Mike described his 2-year term of service working in the city hall of a small town in Albania where he focused on community and economic development. He shared how the Peace Corps experience immerses a volunteer into the culture and community in which they live and work, and how he not only accomplished projects laid out by his appointment but also became involved in community projects outside of his day job.
Now the Regional Recruiter in Boston for Peace Corps, Mike explained the impacts of COVID-19 on Peace Corps operations. This pandemic caused the first ever global evacuation in 60 years of all Peace Corps volunteers from their assigned countries. Peace Corps continues to recruit online and hopes to have volunteers deployed in 2021, depending on the state of the pandemic in the countries served.
Lastly, Mike shared that Rotary International is the only external entity to hold an MOA with the Peace Corps, which is a federal agency. Rotary and Peace Corps are natural partners in four ways: they both serve in similar areas, often collaborating on projects; Peace Corps volunteers make great Rotary presenters, as they are required to share their experiences upon their return to the U.S. as part of their commitment to spread cultural awareness at home; Candidates for Peace Corps volunteer opportunities are required to have service experience, which they often get from volunteering through their local Rotary Club; and Rotarians make wonderful Peace Corps volunteers as their values for service are aligned with the Peace Corp mission.

RotarIAN NEWS...
Rich Eisner shared that his wife is happy to start a new job in the insurance division of an area bank.
Tim Clarke shared that he was pleased with today’s presentation. He was initially thinking of skipping this week due to other commitments and the amount of Zoom meetings he already had on his calendar for the day. Then he thought about how he would hope that others would attend if the roles were reversed. He was glad he attended and that he can keep his connection to our Club in this virtual environment.
Jason Consalvo shared that he was finally able to track down enough pressurized wood to build a shed in his backyard over the weekend.
Gerrit Bradley shared that his wife has made great efforts to clean out the house, and they have disposed of an unused bed frame and a play set that is now at a happy home in Wakefield.
Bruce Whear proudly shared that his wife Heidi was presenting at a national conference in the other room at their home on her Village to Village project, which assists the elderly.
Come celebrate Tim Clarke’s birthday!!! Also, in the spirit of Halloween, costumes are welcome! Interested Rotarians, should send Adria a name and description of their favorite or most unique Halloween costume from years past for another round of Who's that Rotarian Trivia! Significant others and friends are welcome and encouraged to play along! If you have a photographic evidence, please email it to Adria. It will make for a spook-tacular evening!
