This week at Rotary...

This week at Rotary we welcomed Andi Hall Phinney from Grateful Friends. Andi is a 1984 graduate of Boston University College of Communication. She has spent over three decades in various media companies, including working at several major Boston radio stations, as a specialist in sales and marketing. She also spent 10 years in the music industry at Universal, promoting popular national and global music acts and helping them to gain both broadcast air play and unit sales, branding their signature sound.

In 2022, Andi stepped into the role of Executive Director of Beverly-based non-profit, Grateful Friends, excited to help them shine their light through vibrant fundraising, as they continue their mission to offer financial assistance to adult cancer patients residing in Essex and Middlesex County, who need support while they navigate their cancer treatment journey.

Grateful Friends works with adult cancer patients who are currently or will be going through treatment. They hope to alleviate some of the stresses involved, both financially and mentally/emotionally. Various programs are available to patients depending on their individual needs and circumstances. For example, they offer rides to appointments, financial support, and gift baskets. The organization is nearly 100% volunteer based. They raise money through donations, events and sponsorships, and general fundraising. Grateful Friends has several upcoming events. On October 22, they will be having a Rise 'n Shine Halloween Pancake Breakfast. This Halloween-themed event is guaranteed family fun for guests of all ages and includes a delicious pancake breakfast buffet. There is a Holiday Luncheon on November 30 and in May they host a Gala and Fundraiser. For more information, go to their website.

AS THE ROTARY WORLD TURNS...

The Fight Against Polio in the News

The New York Times ran an article about several disease that can be wiped out in the future, with polio making an appearance. For those with an online subscription, the article can be found here.

Maui Wildfire Relief

August 9, 2023, was a tragic day for our fellow Rotarians, their families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. The Marblehead Harbor Rotary is sending our love and support to all of those impacted by the devastating wildfires.

As people of action, we are following suit with many others and taking immediate action. We need to Create Hope for Maui.

Through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations.

A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.

Please consider donating directly to this special fund, Maui Fire Relief Fund link.

From August 23 - September 23 the Marblehead Harbor Rotary will be donating all club "happy dollars" to the Maui Fire Relief Fund and encourages all who can, to also make a contribution, in any amount.

Jack and Harrison Consalvo joined us this week, along with our speaker and others from the Grateful Friends organization.

50:50 Raffle

$2905 pot

Bill Henning and Rinus Ooshoek played this week. No winners this week!!!!!! There are only TWO cards left in the deck.

Rumor is that Rotarians must be present next week in order to collect the winnings. We expect the largest turnout in Salem Rotary's history. Again this is a rumor that we are intent on spreading.

The winner for the Cardboard Boat Race of $110 was Mike McLaughlin. He must have known because he specifically asked about the contest. He donated the winnings to Grateful Friends. Please note that if Ryan Guilmartin wins the 50/50 Raffle next week he will not be making any donation except to the Ryan Guilmartin housing fund.

ROTARIAN NEWS

  • Jason Consalvo announced that his sons will be starting school soon but they were able to join us at Rotary this week. He and his brother replaced the brakes on his brother's car. We don't know which hospital his brother is currently at, though we are positive that the brakes didn't work.
  • Gerrit Bradley was thankful for the support of Rotary and the Community Service Committee, along with the bouncy house "testers", aka Jason's boys. The bird report this week is that an eagle finally made an appearance and hummingbirds watched
  • Jen Close is excited to be celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary.
  • Leslie Levesque was happy to drop her daughter at college at the University of Tampa but not so happy about the coming storm.
  • Rick Jakious is BACK! He allowed his kids to choose between a Bar Mitzvah or a trip, and they took a family for an incredible three week trip to Japan. A typhoon derailed one hiking trip. The heat was brutal, and Rick felt comfortable sharing that he didn't urinate one day. I'm not sure that we really wanted to know this.

Club Events & Announcements

The rumor mill is telling us that Dutch Drinks might be making a comeback. Stay tuned...
