SPEAKER OF THE WEEK
Speaking first was J. D. Scrimger, Creative Writing Professor at Salem State, wrote a musical with his son, Aiden, about pigs going to the slaughterhouse. The name of the musical is "Only Human", with performances on June 26-29 at Ames Hall. All the characters in the play are barnyard animals. Several of the actors are from Salem State.

Next, 23 students were presented, from the Early Act Club, the school committee of The Phoenix School, and the Kids Help the World Committee. The committee spoke about leadership learning, new ideas, and community service and are involved in projects that help animals and humans. They are learning about cooperation and collaboration, bringing food to Lifebridge and volunteering at the North East Animal Shelter. They have learned about delegating responsibilities and working together. Other projects have been Saving the Rhino, and supporting the Philippines, as well as a project to save the sloths. The students donated dog beds and leashes to the North East Animal Shelter.

Senator Joan Lovely spoke next. She said she appreciates John Keenan's long career working together with her over the years. The Senate has the budget off to the Conference Committee. Joan is on the Tourism Committee, supporting the $3M dedicated to tourism. She also supported the CPA, which is getting an additional $10M appropriated to the fund this year.
Joan is also a Senate co-chair for the mental health committee dealing with substance abuse. The Senate put an $18M investment in prevention and treatment programs to help an additional 10,000 people with substance abuse issues, including those with opiate and alcohol addiction.
Joan spoke about the raise in the minimum wage, going from $8 to $11/hour over the next 3 years, and commented that the rate simply going from $8 to $9 will help 90,000 people in Massachusetts.
Unemployment insurance will freeze rates for 3 years to come up with reforms in the program.
Seniors came to the Salem Council on Aging to get their "Charlie Card". They went to Peabody and Beverly as well.
Joan was at the Fred Berry Library dedication at Salem State. Mr. Berry said, "In 1949 when I was born, the doctors said I probably wouldn't amount to much. Here I am and you are dedicating this building to me."
Next, Representative John Keenan spoke. He said he appreciated Senator Berry's help over the years. And, it was a pleasure to have served with Senator Lovely and his staff who have given him much support.
He said in the final 2 months of the legislative session, the budget must be passed by July 31st. Massachusetts has over $1B in its rainy day account. It now has the highest bond rating in the state's history. He is on the Telecom & Energy Committee, they are in the process of passing a bill for repair of gas pipes in the ground.
Other issues he spoke about were:
- The new garage is going up, and will be in full operation by October 10th for Halloween. It was a $43M project.
- He said the power plant is waiting for one last decision from the State for redevelopment.
- Salem State has 2 projects underway - the performance center, and a new dorm project.
He also said there is a clean energy bill that will generate hydropower from Canada.
John said he appreciates the help and input from his fellow Rotarians over his tenure.
