Friends Forever International Inspires with Stories of Youth Leadership and Global Impact

At this week's meeting, the Salem Rotary Club welcomed Amelia Burke from Friends Forever International (FFI) for an inspiring presentation. FFI is a remarkable organization that runs rigorous leadership programs for individuals and groups both in the United States and abroad. Their work spans a wide range of participants—including middle and high school students, senior citizens, professional and civic leadership groups, faith-based organizations, and universities.

Amelia Burke of Friends Forever International (FFI) delivered a powerful presentation about the organization’s transformative leadership programs—and she wasn’t alone. Joining her was a past participant who took part in the 2022 immersion program in Ireland and now travels the world working with FFI, embodying the program’s mission to help youth become the best versions of themselves so they can help their communities do the same.

Founded in the United States in response to the political and religious turmoil in Northern Ireland, FFI has grown into a global initiative with campuses in New Hampshire, Northern Ireland, and Belize. At its core, the organization emphasizes six key values: resilience, empathy, communication, impact, playfulness, and effort. Every program activity is intentionally designed to reflect at least one of these values.

FFI’s main offering is its Immersion Program, a comprehensive, cross-cultural experience that includes team building, skill development, and community engagement. Participants, typically ages 14–18, work together across cultures and backgrounds, culminating in a participant-designed social action project. The program is completely free for participants, thanks to generous supporters and community partners.

Core components of FFI programs include mindfulness, self-reflection, service-based learning, storytelling and communication, art and creativity, and goal-setting with evaluation. The New Hampshire campus also offers credit-bearing courses in leadership, social studies, creativity and arts, science, healthy living, and more—including special education and advanced-level programs.

Many alumni return for further training to become counselors. Recent alumni training sessions were held in New Orleans, LA, and Boom Creek, Belize, helping to build the next generation of global leaders.

Rotary has played a vital role in FFI’s history, with strong partnerships and support from Clubs across the country. Salem Rotarians were inspired to see firsthand how FFI is making a lasting impact—one young leader at a time.

Each of FFI’s programs focuses on team building, leadership development, cultural appreciation, healthy living, and creativity through the arts. The organization has deep roots in Rotary, with Rotarian involvement embedded in its founding and continued engagement to this day. Over the past year alone, Friends Forever International has partnered with nearly 50 Rotary Clubs across five states.

We were proud to hear updates from Amelia and learn more about how FFI continues to empower the next generation of leaders through its mission-driven work.

At this week's meeting, we also welcomed our newest Rotary Club member, Mary Ellen Leahy. Congratulations!

ROTARY NEWS

Francesco Arezzo Named RI President

In moments of change the strength and resilience of our Rotary family shine brightest. Following the unexpected resignation of Mário César Martins de Camargo, the Rotary International Board moved swiftly and thoughtfully, in accordance with our bylaws, to ensure continuity in our mission and leadership.

Francesco Arezzo, a member of the Rotary Club of Ragusa, Italy, has been selected by the Board of Directors to become Rotary International’s president for 2025-26. Arezzo will become president on 1 July.

The Board conducted a special session following the unexpected resignation of RI President-elect Mário César Martins de Camargo on 8 June. Guided by the RI code and policies, the Board selected the new president-elect from a pool of candidates who were considered by the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in August 2023.

The 2025-26 presidential message, announced at the 2025 Rotary International Assembly in February, will remain Unite for Good, which calls on Rotary members to be a force for unity in a world increasingly divided by politics, geography, and ideology. Through service projects, Rotary brings together people of every background — across races, religions, and professions — in a shared mission to do good in their communities.

Arezzo is an orthodontist in private practice. He is active internationally as a member of the Italian, European, and American orthodontics associations. He is vice president of the National Association of Italian Dentists for the province of Ragusa and was the founder and head for seven years of the delegation for Ragusa of the National Trust for Italy. He is a Knight of Honor and Devotion in Obedience within the Sovereign Order of Malta.

A Rotary member for more than 30 years, Arezzo has served as vice chair of the Joint Strategic Planning Committee and as RI director, learning facilitator, and as district conference presidential representative.

Arezzo is a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. He is married to Anna Maria Criscione, an entrepreneur in the tourism field. They have two children.

ROTARIAN NEWS...

  • Joe Amico is very happy. Two weeks ago he was with his grandchildren in Wisconsin. The oldest is transitioning while the youngest has a rare disorder that leaves them speaking only in whispers. Joe heard her say something to him when she asked him about how many books she could have. Last week he also chaired the world institute on drug and alcohol addiction assembly in the Midwest once again.
  • Jason Consalvo noted our recent donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem comes with a foursome for their golf event at the Ferncroft. He needs three more volunteers, so reach out to him directly if you are interested.
  • Gerrit Bradley reported that Willa graduated Skidmore in May. He is very excited. She graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Germany. Willa be trying to become a teacher. Gerrit's father was the recent recipient of a brand new hip (you're my boy, Blue) making Gerrit’s life tricky as the day nurse.
  • Tim Clarke shared the sad news that a past Salem Rotarian passed away recently.
