SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Dr. Kurt Steinberg, the President of Montserrat College in Beverly was our speaker this week.

Montserrat was founded in 1970 by a group of artists, teachers and professors with an enrollment of about 400 students.  The college has a $27.5 million impact on Beverly and the surrounding towns.

Some fields of study are Media Art Education, Animation, Graphic Design, Painting, Illustration, Photo & Film, Printmaking, and Sculpture. There are 4 professional galleries and one student run gallery.  2/3 of the students study studio art, and the remaining 1/3 study liberal arts.  The focus is to teach the students to understand the evolution of their crafts, and to understand the history of the art.

The student ratio is 12:1 female to male.  The faculty are artists engaged in their different disciplines.  The employment ability of the students is a major focus of the staff. 50% of the students receive offers from the required 120 hour internship in which they are enrolled.  85% of the alumni are still employed in their concentration they had at Montserrat.

100% of the BFA students receive merit scholarships. They are dedicated to be affordable for the students with talent.
