THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER
This week's speaker was Karen Andreas, the Regional Publisher of the Salem News and its affiliates.
Karen is a self-described story teller who began her talk by telling the Rotary Club that the most difficult
story she has covered was the recent murder of Danvers High School teacher, Colleen Ritzer. Karen also expressed that the best story she covered was an interview with a serviceman who had recently returned home from the Gulf War. That same gentleman is now Karen's husband.
The news is, of course, a very important part of Karen's life, but what she conveyed to our group is, more important than the news itself, is getting the news right. She and her staff are very careful about what they put into print, and make sure they are not reporting on rumors or hearsay. This is important to Karen because the Salem News, its reporters, and editors are all local. Local reporters are also local citizens, and are the same people we see in the grocery store or at school events. Being imbedded in the community helps keep Karen and her staff accountable for what they print. She describes the Salem News as a "community newspaper with a responsibility to the community".
Karen also discussed the progression of the Salem News as society transitions deeper into a digital/online era. The paper faces challenges, but also many new opportunities, as its readers are picking up the paper less, and visiting the website more.
NEXT WEEK'S SPEAKER
Next week's speaker will be Gary Magnent of Sage Scientific.
