Phoenix School Students Share Catalina Island Learning Adventure with Salem Rotary

At a recent Salem Rotary Club meeting, students from the Phoenix School captivated members with stories and reflections from their immersive travel study trip to Catalina Island, California. The presentation highlighted the school’s commitment to real-world education, team building, and experiential learning beyond the classroom.

Leading up to the trip, students researched the flora, fauna, geology, and history of Catalina Island to prepare for the hands-on exploration. For many, it was their first overnight field trip—and the excitement was palpable. One student couldn’t wait to go snorkeling, a wish fulfilled with two snorkeling excursions, including a memorable dive at Willow Cove where they encountered garibaldi fish and crabs.

The students shared journal entries that were later developed into creative or reflective writing pieces. One entry described the vibrant ecosystem and a scarlet hummingbird sighting during a hike. Others reflected on the challenges of rock climbing, the feeling of connection to nature, and the awe of stargazing in a place free from light pollution. A powerful theme throughout was how the natural beauty and physical challenges of the trip fostered personal growth and deeper appreciation for the environment.

A highlight of the journey was a day aboard the tall ship Irving Johnson, where students learned to tie nautical knots, absorbed sea life traditions, and even spent the night on board. From marine life labs to sunrise hikes, the trip was filled with new experiences that sparked curiosity, courage, and camaraderie.

The Salem Rotary Club was inspired by the students’ thoughtful insights and the school’s dedication to outdoor and experiential learning. It was a reminder that education isn’t just about what happens in a classroom—it’s also about venturing out into the world with open eyes, active minds, and a willingness to learn.

ROTARIAN NEWS...

  • Matt Calcutt shared his story of snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. He saw a huge sea turtle, panicked, and bolted to the top. Matt was disappointed that the turtle was gone by the time he regrouped enough to return to the depths.

  • Gary Stirgwolt also had a snorkeling story. He dove at night with Jane, and there was amazing bioluminescence. He also shared the story of Jason Consalvo having a great golf drive that amounted to nothing.

  • Bill Henning thanked Rotarians for helping with the traffic island beautification project, but we really should be thanking him for coordinating everything.

  • Jason Consalvo also talked about the golf outing with Doc and Gary. He claims to have had a bunch of good shots that day, not so many on Monday. He’s old.
