FRIENDS OF THE SALEM COUNCIL ON AGING
Andrew LaPointe and Terry Arnold

The Salem Council on Aging was founded in October of 1967 to serve the needs of Salem's aging community. It now serves more than 2,000 individuals annually, providing a variety of services, including but not limited to: music programs, special events, exercise classes, sightseeing trips, museum tours, book clubs, in- and out-of-town trips, social services, home-delivered meals and daily hot lunches, and overall support services to ensure that all seniors can maximize the quality of their lives.

The Friends of the Salem Council on Aging was founded in 1980 to work closely with the Salem Council on Aging, and play an important role in supporting and assisting the SCOA by raising funds from the Salem community. This money is used to support the services, activities, and programs provided to the city's senior population. The main goal of the organization is to enrich the lives of Salem's seniors.

The Friends provided over 500 meals for homebound seniors during the holiday season. They have also purchased a handicap-accessible van for senior transportation services. Other examples of what the Friends do include supplying equipment, holding classes, providing shelter to displaced seniors, and creating a physical fitness program for the needs of the senior population.

A very good to remind everyone about the upcoming Senior Prom (see Upcoming Events).

This Week in Baseball:
We are entering the 9th inning of the Rotary year. Jane figured out why she could not access her ClubRunner account in completing her task. She researched District goals and presented them to the club. They include DEI goals as well as Membership goals. Each goal has 25 action items, and completing 13 of these items will get a club a recognition of success in that particular goal. Scott got an invitation out to a Rotary event. Carolyn led several Rotarians in plantings downtown (see photos below). Joe informed us of the North Shore Pride Interfaith Service taking place at Tabernacle Church on June 23 at 7 pm. Robyn connected with a Beverly Rotary Club member because she was wearing her Rotary pin at an event.

From the Committees:
Rinus gave us an update on the Salem High School CTE Program's meeting last week with a large union. The Rotary Club was thanked for our donation.

Joint Board Meeting Tuesday June 20. Please RSVP to JEN CLOSE if you will be attending.

Mark has disappeared from Rotary, however Jason Consalvo's backside makes an appearance
Mark Shaw with an apparent headache, mostly likely caused by Alex Sanchez's claim of having an "old body".

  • Mike McLaughlin will be travelling to Oda, Japan, Salem's sister city, as a representative of the city of Salem. The representatives will be hosted by the municipal government. They will have a formal welcome ceremony then will travel across the city and around the country. He's looking forward to riding on the high speed trains and visiting Rotary there, as well as presumably practicing proper Japanese name pronunciation.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
