This week at the Salem Rotary we took a field trip to Salem High School to see all of the great things going on at the CTE program Once again, we were joined by CTE Director and Somerville High School alum Mario Sousa. Mario introduced us to the instructors who coordinate things at the culinary program and the Black Cat Cafe. Ms. Lahey introduced the menu, which was fantastic. We were served a salad topped steak and a balsamic vinaigrette, along with a cheddar broccoli soup and a wonderful selection of cupcakes. No word on how many helpings Bob Anthony had.
Students just finished up exploratory this year, which was the largest exploratory class in SHS history. Exploratory is when newer students can attend many classes in various fields offered within the CTE program before deciding on which field they want to pursue. This indicates that the CTE program continues to grow. Marine service technician was piloted, giving more options to the students at Salem High School. Most programs are pretty much at capacity, and all of the kids got their first or second choice. About 70% of SHS students are enrolled in CTE programs.
Two students spoke to us. Tre spoke about why he chose to pursue culinary. First, he was there for the food, but now sees it as an opportunity to provide for his family while perhaps exploring other career options. Susana has always been passionate about cooking and wants to pursue it going forward. She would love to make a career out of it. Mario indicated that it was common for students to join for different reasons and have different career goals.
Mario explained that Salem High School has a true lottery system for selecting which program students will attend. Students select three fields and the lottery then put into specific CTE programs.
Steve Zrike spoke to the excitement at Salem High School. They believe students should have options. Not everyone should have the same career, but it is the goal of Salem Public Schools to prepare all students for whatever future options they choose, whether it be a four year college, the trades, or the military. He also noted the improved statistics in terms of attendance and graduation rates, and he credits increased engagement as the reason for it. He said that the CTE program is the primary source of engagement.
Elsewhere, we have an upcoming Build-a-Bed event on Saturday with volunteer opportunities available. This is an amazing opportunity to give back and we finally have an address; 73 Buffum Street in Lynn. Not Salem. Lynn. There are more details below in the "Club Announcements and Events" section. It should be repeated though, go to Lynn, not North Salem.

ROTARIAN NEWS
Claire Kallelis told us that there was an actual dumpster fire at the Hawthorne Hotel.
Jason Consalvo noted that it was strange to see Claire outside of the Hawthorne Hotel, and mused about the concept of identity. The only note of interest is that Jason has been at Salem Five for twenty years!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.
We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.
Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.
We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.
In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
