SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Barbara Warren of Salem Sound Coast Watch was our speaker this week.

The SSCW was founded in 1990, and works with communities from Marblehead to Manchester to protect and improve the environment of the coastal waters, watershed, and salt marshes.

The also have a School to Sea program for students who help to clean up trash.  These students initiated the plastic bag ban in Salem and Beverly, and are also part of the "Skip the Straw" campaign in Salem.

Commercial Street and Winter Island received a grant to improve the water quality. On Commercial Street, gardens were planted with salt marsh plants.  Gardens will also be planted at Winter Island.

SSCW is working with the city to set priorities to help with climate change from now until 2026.  The state initiative "Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness" (MVP) is asking every city to make and adaptive plan.  To find out more about climate change go to  resilientma.org.
