Salem Rotary Club Hosts Susan Wisser and Barbara Webster for Insightful Discussion on End-of-Life Choices
At our recent meeting, the Salem Rotary Club had the honor of hosting Susan Wisser, RN, MSM, MBA, along with her guest, Barbara Webster from Compassion & Choices, for an important discussion on the challenges and decisions that terminally ill patients and their families face.
With her extensive background in the healthcare system, Susan provided valuable insights into the complexities surrounding end-of-life care. She shared real-world scenarios, discussed common difficulties patients encounter, and offered guidance on navigating the medical, ethical, and personal choices involved in terminal illness. Her presentation also included practical tips for patients and families seeking to make informed decisions during this difficult time.
Barbara Webster, representing Compassion & Choices, further illuminated the options available to those confronting serious illness, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and advocating for individual autonomy in end-of-life care.
Compassion & Choices is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving care, expanding options, and empowering individuals to chart their end-of-life journey. Their mission is to ensure that patients can access the care they want at the end of life, free from unwanted treatment and suffering. The organization is committed to respecting individual autonomy, confronting challenging end-of-life health issues, and protecting the right to self-determination.
Handouts were provided to help attendees better understand the available resources and considerations. Whether a healthcare professional, a caregiver, or simply someone interested in learning more about this critical topic, attendees found the presentation both enlightening and thought-provoking.
This meaningful conversation allowed us to explore ways to support those facing life’s final chapter with dignity, clarity, and compassion.
We appreciate Susan and Barbara for sharing their expertise and thank all who attended for participating in this essential discussion!

Have you made your contribution to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund-SHARE this year?
Your gift to the Annual Fund helps Rotary clubs take action today to create positive change in communities at home and around the world. Your contributions help us strengthen peace efforts, provide clean water and sanitation, support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children, and fight disease.
The Every Rotarian Every Year initiative asks every Rotarian to support The Rotary Foundation every year.
At the end of every Rotary year, contributions directed to the Annual Fund-SHARE from all Rotary clubs in the district are divided between the World Fund and the District Designated Fund, or DDF.
At the end of three years, DDF come back to our District to pay for Foundation, Club, and District projects that your Club and others in the district choose. Districts may use up to half of their DDF to fund district grants. The remaining DDF may be used for global grants or donated to PolioPlus, the Rotary Peace Centers, or another district.
*Hone your leadership skills (even if you’re not on the club officer path)
*Interact with multi-District participants; learn more about Rotary’s programs
*Share ideas on enhancing the effectiveness of club programs
