HEATHER LANG

The Rotary Club of Salem

This week we had one of our rare summer speakers, Heather Lang. Heather is a Salem Rotary Club Community Service member, as well as a Special Education and ASL teacher in Lynn Public Schools. A veteran teacher of 20 years, she has worked in all grades Pre K-12 in both public and charter school settings throughout her career.

Heather grew up as a Child Of a Deaf Adult (CODA), and American Sign Language ( ASL) was one of her primary languages growing up. Her passion for teaching others ASL has fueled her desire to see ASL as a foreign language option in all high schools.  This past year, her hard work finally paid off as Lynn Public Schools began an ASL pilot program in her high school, and she was able to create the curriculum and teach the course. She presented entirely in ASL with her husband controlling the accompanying slides. The slideshow is attached to the email sent by President Carolyn Shapiro. If you want a copy, try this link or please contact Ryan Guilmartin.

THIS WEEK IN ROTARY

Let's start the new Rotary year with a quick July fundraiser for the Annual Fund SHARE

We have 2 tickets each for the following 8 Red Sox games at Fenway Park to give away to raise money for our Rotary Foundation:
  • August 9/10/11 Houston Astros vs Boston Red Sox
  • August 23/24/25 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Boston Red Sox
  • August 27/28 Toronto Blue Jays vs Boston Red Sox
The seats are located in row 1 of the Aura Club (formerly Home Plate Pavilion Club) and have some of the best views in the ballpark (see photo on the left). The face value of these tickets is $235 per seat.

To participate in this fundraiser you need to submit a bid in which you commit to donate at least $400 to the Annual Fund SHARE (for both tickets together). The higher your bid, the more likely you are going to get the tickets. Please reach out to DRFC Alexander Falk via email before July 31 with a list of your preferred dates and your bid commitment.

Fete en Blanc

Representatives from the Rotary Club of Salem attended this year's Fete en Blanc dinner. The dinner is organized every year by a committee and held in a secret location that is disclosed immediately before the dinner, this year on Chestnut Street. It was thankfully pretty shady where the 19 Rotarians and guests sat.

NEXT WEEK IS AN EVENING MEETING

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

No guests this week! It's summer... However we were graced by the in-person presence of Mark Shaw. He did not take any phone calls or doze off this week.

ROTARY NEWS

Don't miss the next in the series of Membership Webinars, coming July 8 at 7:30 pm.
Here's your reminder for the monthly Simply Irresistible Monday Membership Meetup!

ROTARIAN NEWS...

  • Liz Bradt informed us about an opportunity for Rotarians to broadcast their business on SATV. Rotarians can be interviewed by a fellow a Rotarian. Reach out to Carolyn or Liz if you want to be interviewed or to be an interviewer.
  • Jason Consalvo had two "quick" things. First, the wonderful Ryan Guilmartin graciously allowed him to have the last short rib ravioli. Jason also noted that "world wide web" is only three syllables while "www" is nine.
  • Tim Clarke finally brought auction winners out on his boat, a group that included Marie "Fredo" Cardillo who has not been seen since.
