This week at Rotary...
ANNUAL THANKSGIVING MEETING
Hosted by the Beverly Club
Danversport Yacht Club
This week at Rotary, we held our annual Thanksgiving meeting with the Beverly Rotary Club. It was Beverly's turn to host so we met at the Danversport Yacht Club in the Beverlyish area. Whatever the case, both Beverly and Danvers used to be parts of Salem, so they have that mistake in common. While this Thursday's game will be end of the season and clear highlight for the Beverly High School football team, it is a mere warmup game for Salem who will travel to Foxboro next Wednesday for their first Super Bowl this millennium. You can actually watch the streaming video of the Super Bowl next Wednesday on the Patriots website or by
clicking here. Good luck!!
The meeting began with the introduction of dignitaries, coaches, booster club representatives, and team captains. Mayor Dominic Pangallo of Salem and Mayor Cahill of Beverly gave short speeches and gave words of encouragement. Mayor Dominic pointed out that in 15 years of Mayor Driscoll's city leadership the football team never made a Super Bowl, but in his first year they did. State Representative Manny Cruz offered words of reminder about what comes after the game and the work that goes into building communities. Joan Lovely told the student-athletes to save their letterman jackets because they will want them when they're older and she apparently wants both teams to win.
The captains for the two football teams played a game where blindfolded representatives raced across the dance floor. Men dressed as turkeys tried to stop them. Needless to say, the rules were a little loose and probably rigged. The Beverly team won, likely to be their only victory this week outside of maybe the coin toss on Thursday. The Salem team were the real winners though as they had first dibs at the table of Bob Anthony "appetizers" while the Beverly team had their victory photo taken.
This will be the 125th playing of the game between the birthplace of the National Guard and the birthplace of the Navy (sorry Marblehead). The first game was in 1891 and is an older rivalry than Army-Navy, though not as continuously played as Lehigh-Lafayette. This year we at the Salem Rotary did remember to bring a check for the Beverly booster club which doesn't always happen.
Go Witch!
There appeared to be a black market sneaker deal going on in the parking lot after the festivities involving Doc Eisner and Claire Kallelis. A full report with be issued by our investigative team in the coming weeks.
