DANIELLE BASS
Community Relations Manager
Better Business Bureau

This week at Rotary we partied like it was 2020 with an all Zoom virtual meeting featuring speaker Danielle Bass from the Better Business Bureau. Danielle is the Community Relations Manager for Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. She has been with the organization since 2019.

She spoke at length about scams targeting There is no real way to stop them. Some tactics though including not answering and reporting spammers to the FTC. Even answering the phone can get recipients on an "active number" list that is simply resold to other spammers. These calls are hard to police because they often come from overseas, though the FTC has been working with providers to identify and stop spammers. Another scam we are seeing more now is via text, usually referencing an order from a large company such as Amazon, FedEx, or Target, and clicking the link often leads to scammers getting login information. Do not click on links sent via text. For messages referring to deliveries, verify the information in your confirmation email sent when you ordered a product for delivery. Email scams are common but are easier to identify by simply looking at the entire email address, looking for extended email addresses or minor misspellings.

Danielle went into shopping fraud. A common example is a skimming device which can be inserted into credit card readers and ATM machines. They can be identified because tampering is evident with damage around the reader, discoloration, or anything obvious. Often the skimming device is large and bulky. The proper reader should look normal. Chip readers are You can get an RFID cover to protect chip readers on Generally speaking credit cards are easier to get money returned than debit cards as well as tend to be more difficult to draw money from.

Danielle encourages everyone to take steps to protect ourselves from data breaches by going over bank and credit card statements, as well as changing password on a quarterly basis. These passwords should not be easy or obvious. Be sure to store them in a safe place or a password app. If you feel like someone got ahold of your information, you can take the step of freezing your credit lines.

Bob Anthony, who apparently has some dirt on the powers that be at Rotary, will have his birthday celebrated next week, presumably with root beer floats.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
