This week we heard from longtime Salem Rotarian Dave Wescott! It was the first in a series of scheduled speakers who are currently members of the club as a way of reintroducing themselves.
Dave began with telling us about what Rotary was like when he first joined the Salem Rotary. He showed up late for the first meeting and had to pay $1 for being tardy. Rotarians used to battle over the various fines, but it was all in good fun. When he started, he handled the raffle, which was (and still is) quite the experience.
Dave served as President during the 2008-2009 Rotary and told us how he bolted from the PETS meeting at the mention of the Four Way Test. To Dave, Rotary is about the friendship and relationships that are developed here. Service was also of significant importance to him. The work in the community, from the events to the scholarships, is what makes Rotary a truly special place.
Joanne Scott recounted how she and Dave did the Polar Plunge together, running in multiple times. Apparently Dave did some singing back in the day, as Bruce Whear reminded everyone.
AS THE ROTARY WORLD TURNS...
From DG Lori Karas
September is Basic Education and Literacy month. Have you been thinking you'd like to learn more about volunteering with one of the District committees? Perhaps Membership, Public Image (PI), Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI), the Environment, or Foundation are among your passions. Maybe you're a past president of your club and you've thought - how do I become an Assistant Governor (AG)? You're in luck - as you'll be able to learn, share, explore and sign up when you attend the September 14th 6:30PM Zoom event. Maui Wildfire Relief
August 9, 2023, was a tragic day for our fellow Rotarians, their families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. The Marblehead Harbor Rotary is sending our love and support to all of those impacted by the devastating wildfires.
As people of action, we are following suit with many others and taking immediate action. We need to Create Hope for Maui.
Through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations.
A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.
From August 23 - September 23 the Marblehead Harbor Rotary will be donating all club "happy dollars" to the Maui Fire Relief Fund and encourages all who can, to also make a contribution, in any amount.

ROTARIAN NEWS
Jason Consalvo is happy that the kids are back at school. Graham proved himself a smart young man by riding his bike away from his dad and heading off to school . Also a reminder that his sons are Graham and Harrison, not Jack as previously and erroneously reported.
Jane Stirgwolt had a wonderful trip to Acadia
Bruce Whear returned to hear Dave talk about the good ol' days. He's been busy performing all summer, apparently every Tuesday around noon. He recently had a show in Marblehead and will be heading to Greece for eleven days. Since he doesn't really like Mediterranean food, he will have to find things to eat. Or perhaps it's time to expand those culinary horizons, Bruce.
Kristen Armstrong reported that grandpa Jack has taken the youngest son to Disney. Unrelatedly, she took her first passenger on the bike.
Tyler Hains also sent his kids off to their first week of school. His oldest two boys are performing in a theater production this weekend in Methuen at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall. The theater was built around the organ.
Joanne Scott took last week she off and adopted another dog, a gorgeous German Shephard. Unfortunately the new dog was not compatible with her current dog, and she had drive to North Carolina to give it back.
Rinus Oosthoek made a return from a bout with Covid and a trip to the Netherlands, and then another bout of Covid.
Jason Lang reported that he is short. He has also been busy. His daughter started high school in Beverly, so now he feels short and old. He went the wrong way during drop off, another sign of old age. He was lucky enough to spend three weeks in Europe. Two weeks were in London, and the third week in Belgium. It was a magical trip though he came down with a cold, but not Covid.
Joe Amico is excited for his upcoming first anniversary with Jim. This is a busy time of year, so they celebrated early by going to the top of the Prudential restaurant, observation deck and exhibits. Happy Anniversary was written on dessert.
Gerrit Bradley was thankful for winning the raffle. He also had a fun fellowship event in New Hampshire. His neighbors had a bonfire, continuing a tradition of the previous owners. It was a great time for all everyone that came by. His nephew has been hoping to windsurf, and he finally caught the wind and sailed away. Both of his kids are off to college. No bird report.
