SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Brian Kennedy, the new Executive Director of the Peabody Essex Museum, was the speaker.

He acknowledged the significant role Rotary Clubs have played in the communities where he has worked over the years, which include his hometown of Dublin, Ireland and Toledo, Ohio.

He spoke about how his passion for art began at the age of 13, fostered by his mother and an aunt.  He articulated his view that a museum is a storehouse of knowledge and that it is the job of the museum staff to reveal that knowledge.  He also acknowledged the unprecedented growth that the PEM has recently experienced and what a wonderful place Salem is to examine American history.

Finally, Brian spoke about the process he intends to embark upon to discern the purpose the PEM wants to serve and then develop a plan to fulfill that purpose.
