ANNUAL LUNCH WITH THE ROTARY CLUB OF BEVERLY

This Rotary Club of Beverly and many local dignitaries joined us this week for the annual celebration of upcoming Thanksgiving football game between the Salem High School Witches and the Beverly High School Panthers. This year marks the 124th meeting between the two rivals. Salem Rotary President Claire Kallelis gave everyone a brief history of the game which dates back to 1898. Lunch was dedicated to Joseph "Pep" Cornacchio, also known in Mr. Football in Salem, who played in the 1940 game between the two schools.

Beverly Rotary President Michael Jones, who was roundly booed on Zoom by Mark Shaw, completed a pass to President Kallelis. Separately, Bruce Whear was his very own cheering section in the back of the room.

Many local dignitaries spoke at the meeting, including friends of Salem Rotary Joan Lovely and Paul Tucker, offering words of camaraderie and encouragement to the student athletes. Beverly Head Football Coach Jeff Hutton gave his thoughts on the upcoming game, as did Salem Head Football Coach Matt Bouchard. Both coaches thanked the two Rotary Clubs, the Hawthorne Hotel, their school respective administrations, and their booster clubs. As always, each Rotary club made a donation to the other city's booster club. Thankfully the Salem club remembered the check this year!

The highlight of the meeting was the introduction of the team captains for both schools, including both the football teams and cheerleading squads. Coach Bouchard explained how they preach the lessons of how habits lead to dreams. If the student athletes are not reaching their dreams, they need to either up their habits or lower these dreams. Obviously they encourage upping the habits to reach these dreams.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
