Our guest speaker at the Salem Rotary this week was Executive Director of the Ipswich River Watershed Association Erin Bonney Casey. Erin provided us the latest on the Ipswich River Watershed efforts. Erin joined IRWA in 2022 and helped to create their newest program area: Resiliency, which focuses on ensuring a river and watershed t
hat is healthy enough to withstand future challenges. Erin became Executive Director of IRWA in June 2024. She holds a BA from Bates College and Masters of Science in Water Science, Policy, and Management from Oxford University. Erin and her family moved to Salem in 2021. She spends her spare time restoring their historic home and exploring outdoor spaces across New England.
The mission of the Ipswich River Watershed Association is to work to protect nature, and make sure there is enough water available for people, fish, and wildlife, both today and in the future. They consider themselves a hub connecting many different stakeholders in the watershed, from politicians and the public to private companies. A watershed is any section of land that feeds water into the same source, in this case the Ipswich River. The Ipswich River provides drinking water for 350,000 people and feeds into the reservoirs servicing Salem and Beverly. The IRWA is also working with the North Shore Water Resilience Task Force which aims to identify and advance long-term solutions to improve water supply resilience and ecosystem health in the Ipswich River Watershed.
Erin encourages people to visit the headquarters in Ipswich and to consider
becoming a member. All members receive a free paddling map and may use our fleet of kayaks and canoes for free. Memberships are valid through May of the following year.
The city's new downtown communication system works. It was tested out during Rotary at an annoying time.

Blood Drive
Join us on Monday, November 11 between 10 am and 3 pm at the Boston Yacht Club for a simple yet impactful act of kindness – donating blood. Remember, you or your loved ones may require this life-saving gift someday, so why not pay it forward now? It only takes around 15 minutes, and the Red Cross will ensure you're in good health with a quick temperature and blood pressure check. Plus, enjoy some delicious snacks and soak in a serene Harbor view while making a difference. Your donation could be someone's lifeline, so mark your calendar and be there to help save lives. If you can’t donate then please help us by recruiting some friends, colleagues or family members.
And this Blood Drive is on Veteran’s Day! So it’s a special holiday to pay it forward to our service men and women…a unique opportunity to feel like you’re doing something!
