SPEAKER OF THE WEEK
Mickey introduced our speaker, John Andrews, a Salem resident and photographer. This past year John provided the beautiful photos for the Rotary calendar. John owns a marketing company called Social Palates (not pilates!)
John said that he is a former chef, so that is where the company's name originated. It also is related to "people's tastes".
John grew up in Stoneham, but loves Salem because it is so lively with events, coffee shops, and a sense of community.
His company serves as an "umbrella" service for small businesses who, like big businesses, need promotion, marketing, and web design. John promotes events, products, food, fine art, etc. He wants to give great value to small businesses and hopes that his pictures will be used.
John follows Chris Brogan, father of social media, marketing, etc. who says that everything in marketing is personal and about telling the story. So, when John consults with a business he wants to know what is the business trying to tell people? Who is the business and why should people care? The answer to these questions can be depicted by John through stunning visuals. Web designs should be clean and gorgeous, letting the pictures tell the story because they are the most sharable and visual content.
John's consultation includes advising clients how they can be more integrated into the community...what events should a business person attend?
John discussed a project that he has begun called "We Are Salem". It is Instagram based. Every day someone different, who has signed up ahead of time, takes photos throughout the day. Everything is allowed as long as it is in Salem. Nothing is inappropriate as long as there is not blatant advertising involved. This project will have 365 perspectives of Salem by the end of the year! It already includes 5,000 photographs! In fact, Juli Lederhaus is scheduled to have a photo day soon.
John would like to have an Art Show about the "We Are Salem" project so that everyone's work could be seen. He also wants to include the photos on postcards, books, and other items. Eventually, he will have a APP for this project.
John has been asked to do "tie-in" projects. As an example, he did a Salem sketch by photographing 90 Salem residents and producing a video that includes those photos. In addition, John has worked on the PEM Artopia project.
NEXT WEEK'S SPEAKER
The April 29th meeting is an evening social meeting being held at Adriatic Restaurant at 5pm.
