This week at Rotary...

Joe St. Pierre
Project Manager
Crowley Wind Services

This week we heard from Joe St. Pierre, Project Manager with Crowley Wind Services. Joe is an engineer currently serving as Project Manager for Crowley Wind Services, assigned to support the Development and Operation of the Salem Wind Port. Once complete, the site will be the Commonwealth's largest offshore wind port capable of supporting projects all along the east coast.

Joe holds a BS and MS from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, is a United States Coast Guard licensed engineer, and is a Journeyman Electrician in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

For Joe, his mission is to get the wind plant up and running. He is excited to transform the proposed site, which was the coal power plant when he was growing up in Salem, into something worthy of the 21st century. Crowley Wind Services has agreed to develop the site next to the existing gas powered plant. The current renderings of the towers reflect the highest capacity possible, but those are far from the final concept.

There will be significant work done in the surrounding area. This includes dredging of Salem Harbor which will take place prior to construction of the new plant. The existing pier will be demolished and replaced by two new piers. Crowley will be adding additional plantings along Derby and Blaney streets while also protecting existing trees. There is an agreement with the city to receive at least six cruise ships per year  with an entry point near The Landing where the Salem Rotary recently celebrated Dutch Drinks.

NEXT WEEK IS AN EVENING MEETING
FEATURED SPEAKER IS PAUL TUCKER

The Board of Directors will meet at 4 pm. The Salem Rotary Club will meet at 5:15. Both meetings will be at the Hawthorne Hotel.

EDUCATION AND LITERACY MONTH
September is Basic Education and Literacy month.  Have you been thinking you'd like to learn more about volunteering with one of the District committees?  Perhaps Membership, Public Image (PI), Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI), the Environment, or Foundation are among your passions.  Maybe you're a past president of your club and you've thought - how do I become an Assistant Governor (AG)?  You're in luck - as you'll be able to learn, share, explore and sign up when you attend the September 14th 6:30PM Zoom event.  To attend, follow this link to sign up  https://rotary7930.org/event/help-wanted/

Maui Wildfire Relief

August 9, 2023, was a tragic day for our fellow Rotarians, their families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. The Marblehead Harbor Rotary is sending our love and support to all of those impacted by the devastating wildfires.

As people of action, we are following suit with many others and taking immediate action. We need to Create Hope for Maui.

Through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations.

A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.

Please consider donating directly to this special fund, Maui Fire Relief Fund link.

From August 23 - September 23 the Marblehead Harbor Rotary will be donating all club "happy dollars" to the Maui Fire Relief Fund and encourages all who can, to also make a contribution, in any amount.

Visiting Rotarians & Guests

Our speaker, Joe St. Pierre, was in attendance. A couple of visiting Rotarians, Bill Kesseler from Athol and Igor from England, popped by real quickly.

ROTARIAN NEWS

  • Joe Amico gave an update on the graffiti on the rainbow doors in front of Tabernacle Church. He received many heartfelt messages and even some donations. There will be an opportunity for a show of solidarity with an upcoming Interfaith Service. NAGLY helped church members paint the doors. Joe went to Provincetown with the car club, though they could not do the show on Saturday because of the weather.
  • Liz Bradt went with students from Andover Phillips Academy to protest in front of the United Nations building on the current condition of the environment.
  • Ashley Tina informed the club about a new map for families and children to lead their children around the city to family friendly sites. The maps can be picked up at Destination Salem booths. They will be on the Salem Common for broom decorating from 1-3 on September 30. The first 500 children will get a broom before they all head out to see the sites on the aforementioned map.
  • Jason Consalvo defended his carnivore lifestyle by stating that he refuses to eat food unless it is causing "cruelty to the world." For additional reading on Jason's insightful points on the difficulties facing the human race stemming from our dependence on animal proteins, check out George Monbiot's Regenesis.
