This week at Rotary...

We had a leisurely meeting this week and spent time enjoying the final days of summer together. While our friend Bob got creative with his request for coffee, President Joe noted that there was not much on the agenda this week and that committees were welcome to convene following the meeting.

President Joe was happy to report that we had our first in-person Dutch Drinks in quite a while last week at the Landing at Salem Ferry! Several Rotarians came to beat the heat and enjoy a beverage with friends.

what the 4-way test means to me

In keeping with the new tradition of hearing from a Salem Rotarian at the start of each meeting, President Joe created a segment for members to share how they connect to Rotary's Four-Way Test. Similar to the Why I Am a Rotarian segment from last year, the sharer from one week will choose who shares the following week.

Bruce Whear took the podium today to share his Rotary origin story, which connects to the question, "Is it fair to all concerned?" Bruce explained that his introduction to Rotary came from a customer who disagreed with her bill. After discussing the situation, Bruce and his client came to an agreement that was fair to both parties. She noted the fairness of the exchange and invited him to lunch. He has been an active Rotarian ever since! Bruce selected Tim Clarke to share next week.

ROTARIAN NEWS

  • John DiPiano shared that Haley Jellison, his intern and former Salem Rotary Scholarship recipient, has earned a full scholarship to New England Law.
  • Jane Stirgwalt noted that her daughter Hazel has begun her voyage at law school as well.
  • Bob Conley shared that he volunteered at a charity golf tournament in Connecticut over the weekend and had a great time.
  • Bruce Whear told of his new neighbors who welcomed themselves to the neighborhood by delivering cookies with a card about themselves to their new neighbors.
  • Kristen Armstrong shared that she bought a new bike but still doesn’t have her Class M license.
  • Gerrit Bradley explained that the excessive moisture in New Hampshire has caused mushrooms to flourish, which led him to watch a riveting documentary called Fantastic Fungus. He encourages his fellow Rotarians to get acquainted with the fungus among us.
  • Jason Consalvo shared that Harrison is very concerned with fuel consumption. Please do not leave your car idling, because you will run out of gas!
  • President Joe noted that he will be away next week to serve as a keynote speaker at a seminar for addiction specialists. He will be delivering a 3-hour lecture and hosting breakout sessions, while we feast on a lovely, leisurely meal at the Hawthorne. Jack will also be away visiting his girlfriend. In their absence, Claire will be at the podium, and Gerrit will be our IT specialist.
