Volunteer
Let’s not forget our motto, Service Above Self! The Community Service Committee is working hard this year to find more opportunities for Salem Rotarians to serve in our community.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE FRIENDS PROGRAM Ongoing through December 12 (Flexible) | House of the Seven Gables
The House of the Seven Gables is seeking volunteers for its English Language Friends program! The goal of the program is to help students practice conversing in English outside of the classroom. Volunteers will be matched with 1-2 adult English-learning students. After the initial meeting at our office, we ask volunteers to commit to 2 hours of English conversation per week from October 20 - December 12. You decide with your friends when and where to meet. Meet-ups can be a walk, over a coffee/tea, going to a park, etc. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this form.
LIFEBRIDGE DINNER Wednesday, November 12 | 4 PM | Lifebridge
Lifebridge helps the folks in our community who are most in need with important basics like shelter and food. Once every two months, volunteers from the Salem Rotary Club make dinner. Meal prep typically starts around 4/4:30 PM, with dinner service at 5:30 PM. We still need a team leader for this service. Email Liz Bradt if you’d like to volunteer to cook!
DCF HOLIDAY PARTY December 6 and Location TBD
We will once again be participating in the DCF Holiday Party, which serves foster children across the North Shore. This event allows foster children the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with their foster families and often their siblings who are not able to be housed in the same foster home. There are many opportunities to get involved, from wrapping the gifts in advance to volunteer shifts on the day of the event. More details will be shared in the coming weeks!
As we prepare for this year’s Mad Hatter Tea Party Gala & Auction, we are excited to bring our community together for an evening of fun, creativity, and impact. One of the highlights of the night will be our auction, which helps raise the vital funds that fuel our Rotary Scholarship Fund.
To make this event truly extraordinary, we need your help in securing high-quality auction items that will inspire bidding and excitement. Think about:
If you have a great item to donate—or know a business, colleague, or friend who might—please reach out! Sometimes, the best items come from personal connections, and your network could make all the difference.
Please let us know what you can contribute, or who we can reach out to, by February 1, 2026.
Together, we can make this auction unforgettable and raise the resources needed to continue the incredible work of Salem Rotary. We are anticipating this to be a crowd drawing event, so be sure to get your tickets early and please share the event and ticket links on your social media platforms. Thank you for being part of the magic—we can’t wait to celebrate with you at the Mad Hatter Gala!
With gratitude, Jason & Heather Lang Auction Committee Chairs

Salem Rotarians Say . . .
Dakota Russell shared that the House of the Seven Gables is hosting an Immigration Policy Updates 2025: What Nonprofits, Businesses, and Communities Need to Know on Wednesday, November 5, 12 noon. Immigration policy has changed in some big ways this year — from new enforcement powers for USCIS to higher application fees, changes to the naturalization process. In this training, we will provide an overview of some major changes and what these changes mean for nonprofits, business owners, and community members. Their goal is to give you information and practical tools so you can better understand recent policy changes and support the people you work with, your employees, and your neighbors. This event is free to attend, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at this link.
Gerrit Bradley had his hip surgery, and it was a great success. He's currently at home healing up, but he had a great time trying out different Zoom filters during the meeting - the one that turned him into a cat was the best!
Jim Rose will be celebrating his 70th birthday next year. To honor this huge milestone in his life, he's planning to walk over 400 miles of the Camino de Santiago through Spain. He'll be gone for other a month, and his plan is to end in Santiago, Spain. We can't wait to hear about this adventure!
Jason Consalvo decided to celebrate the spooky season by trying to take his two sons through a local haunted house. They've tried before unsuccessfully. One of the boys decided that he had nothing to prove and refused to go in, but the other decided to try and had a great time. They both survived the experience!
Joe Amico has had a harrowing week that began with smelling gas in his home. They found out that there was a leak from one of the stove burners, but that was the start of a huge series of problems that have included turning off the gas until mid-November (really?!), trying to find someone who actually works on their stove brand, and dealing with a gas company who can't decided if they want to refill tanks that aren't supposed to be refilled. The ordeal continues, and he'll keep us posted.
Jason Lang attended a wine dinner at Que Mas on Friday night while Heather had a work event. He was looking forward to the meal, but the surprise was that the person sitting across from him was famed chef Lydia Shire. Her son owns the restaurant, and she was attending as a special guest. Jason had a wonderful time speaking with her, and he's already planning to attend another dinner soon - Lydia told him that she can't wait to see him again!
