The Salem Rotary Club Sponsors the Appreciation Barbecue for Eliot Community Human Services

Members of the Salem Rotary Club spent June 5 sponsoring and hosting an appreciation barbecue for Eliot Community Human Services. This amazing organization provides community-based services to more than 50,000 individuals and families throughout Massachusetts each year, delivering state of the art, evidence-based programming since 1958. Using a person-centered, family-driven approach, Eliot believes strongly in partnering with the communities served.  Eliot programs collaborate with one another, utilizing the expertise within the agency to provide the highest standard of quality services to clients and their families.  This approach fuses community resources, funding resources, and a vast array of services to ensure that the high quality programs bring hope to those served by Eliot.

The Salem Rotary Annual Auction

The Salem Rotary has announced some of the details for this year's auction. It will be a fascinating Night at the Speakeasy, an evening full of food, drinks, fun, fellowship, and of course auction items. Most items, if not all, will be auctioned off at a silent auction, allowing attendees even more time to meet and mingle with one another. The event will be held at the Historic Hawthorne Hotel in beautiful downtown Salem on March 20 at 6 pm. Go to our event website for more information and to purchase tickets.

Salem Rotary Goes Pirate

The Salem Rotary Club had another evening meeting, this time at the Real Pirates Salem. Rotarians had the opportunity to see the world’s only fully authenticated pirate treasure ever discovered – including coins, jewelry, and weapons – retrieved from the wreck of the Whydah, and last touched by the hands of pirates more than 300 years ago.

Salem Rotarians explored the Discovery Lab where everyone had the opportunity to dive into the preservation process of these artifacts. It also served as the gathering spot for Rotarians to socialize and eat. It had the only actual example in the world of a pirate's gun. Rumor has it that several Rotarians became Real Pirates through the complimentary photo experience.

Carolyn Shapiro led tours and spoke about the history of the museum. Bill Golden spoke of the egalitarian spirit among the pirates on board the Whydah and how that same spirit can be found in the Salem Rotary. A wonderful time was had by all.

The food selections itself reflected the trip of the Whydah with items inspired by the various stops of the ship on its journey, such as fruit from Jamaica and chowder from New England. Everything was delicious. Joel, a family friend of the Shapiro's, worked the night as our server ensure that the wine was flowing. As was the beer until it ran out!

Service Membership Pilot Program

This week at Rotary the DEI and Membership Committee presented a new membership proposal called the Service Membership Pilot Program. The goal obviously is to increase membership by providing a more flexible membership option. This program would have a start up fee of $200. Other dues and fees include $50 for quarterly Rotary and District Dues and $25 annually to Rotary International. Service Members would attend one meeting or event per month and be charged for the event. Qualifying events include lunch meetings, evening meetings, fellowship events, and Rotary fundraisers. They must also assist with one service project per month. Expanded service project options will be available going forward.

Senator Joan Lovely Speaks at Rotary

Senator Joan Lovely spoke at Rotary in the first installment of this year's Legislative Luncheon series held with the Salem Chamber of Commerce. Senator Lovely described last year's legislative accomplishments as well as what she has planned for the 2023 legislative calendar.

Senator Lovely is a former Rotarian who has vowed to return once her Tuesdays open back up, presumably when she retires from public service. She is an Assistant Majority Leader, which allows her to work directly with chamber leadership on important budgetary items. She also chairs the Senate Rules Committee.

Salem Rotary Builds Beds for Children in Need

On Saturday, February 11 the Salem Rotary Club along with the EarlyAct Club from the Phoenix School built 10 twin beds for children in need of their own bed. The Salem Club was able to increase to 10 beds using District Grant funds.

At A Bed for Every Child, they believe sleep is just as essential as food, water, shelter, and clothing – and that all children deserve space to dream. If interested in learning more, check out abedforeverychild.org.

Keeping Traditions in a Time of Pandemic

story thumbnail
The Salem Rotary Club has hosted a holiday celebration for foster children and their families on the North Shore for over 20 years. In partnership with the Department of Children and Families (DCF), this celebration is traditionally hosted at Salem High School and is a highlight of the year for both the children and Rotarians, with pizza, games, crafts, bounce houses, story time, and gifts from Santa. This event is one of two the Salem Club runs each year that allows foster children the opportunity to spend time with their biological siblings, who are often not able to be housed in the same foster home.

While we could not host our traditional party this year due to COVID-19, we were still able to bring a little cheer to these children and their families with our Santa’s Drive Through event. Held at the beautiful Kernwood Country Club in Salem, families were greeted with a delicious holiday treat from the Hawthorne Hotel and directed up the beautiful path through the stone gate toward the property’s carport. On the way, families stopped to receive books for children of all ages and original artwork that the children will be able to give their parents as a holiday gift. The grand finale was a meeting Santa and his elf at the carport where all children in the family received a present. Salem Rotarian volunteers, donned in Rotary masks, were stationed throughout the route and working diligently behind the scenes to wrap over 100 gifts and set the stage for a seamless event.
