This week at Rotary we had plenty of time for Happy Dollars and to catch up with our fellow Rotarians. We were blessed by the appearance of Bill Kielbasa, who it turns out exists. Before turning the floor over to Rotarians to share their good news from the past week, Jason Consalvo was able to raise nearly $1,000 in mere minutes to ensure that kids at the upcoming DCF Picnic will have porta potties, an ice cream truck, and a dirty soda bar, though many of us are still confused by that last item.
The Salem Rotary Club will be participating in this year's Salem 400+ Heritage Days Parade and Festival by marching with our cardboard boat in the parade. Jen Close and Ryan Guilmartin will once again be participating in the Cardboard Boat Regatta, Salem's new favorite tradition. If you plan in participating in the parade, please park your vehicle at Shetland Park by 9:30 and take the shuttle to the O'Keefe Center at Salem State University. Why would you do that? Because Shetland Park is much closer to the end of the parade at Derby Wharf than the O'Keefe Center is. Marie Cardillo has also offered up her front yard for watching the parade, so Rotarians can stop by 236 Lafayette Street before the parade kicks off at 10 am.

Sean Kennedy from the Rotary Club of Greater Framingham joined us. He shared some of the history of Framingham, specifically the Framingham Heart Study and his club's role in that long standing scientific study.

DCF PICNIC Thursday August 6 | 3 pm | Plummer Youth Promise Our DCF picnic is coming up in August. The DCF Picnic is an annual event put on by Salem Rotary to celebrate the foster families of the North Shore and to allow foster children the opportunity to interact with each other and often their siblings who are not able to be housed in the same foster home. This fun evening allows these children to be kids and enjoy many activities including a bounce house, outdoor games, a delicious BBQ and more. There are many ways to help! Dutch Drinks
The Cannery- 2 Bridge Street, Salem
Friday, August 7 5 pm (ish)
Join us for some fun and fellowship on the first Friday of the month for Dutch Drinks. In August, we will be headed down to Salem's newest waterfront establishment, The Cannery. Rain location will be on the other side of the bridge. The Cannery is down the ramp and around the back of the building.
Salem Rotarians Say…
Gerritt Bradley saw a large bird but could not tell us what kind because he wasn't wearing his glasses. He and his family did compete the annual Christmas in July competition at the lake where participants provided drinks and snacks, and folks travelled from stop to stop by canoe. His family used some old peppermint sticks that apparently do not expire. No word on how judging was done or if his family won.
Natalie Blue shared the exciting news that The Artful Life celebrated its 10 year anniversary recently. The mayor and other dignitaries, such as Senator Lovely, attended teh event. There will be another celebration coming up on August 11 on Cabot Street in Beverly.
Hannah Beth Hembree was ecstatic to share that she got her first $1 million dollar grant for the Salem Pantry for the buildout of the new location, and that she has already raised $5.5 million of the $12 million goal in fundraising!
MUSICAL INTERMISSION
John Fisher is headed back to the Jersey Shore after being stationed there in the Army in celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations!
Jason Lang will be travelling back to Delaware soon and will be running in a road race there. Importantly, this race will cross a bridge that he played a role in getting built and naming.
Mary Ellen Leahy wore a piece of jewelry she got from her 85 year old aunt. Her aunt got it as a gift for such successful work in the Apollo space program. So cool!
Jason Consalvo and family have returned from vacation in Spain. It was quite the cultural experience travelling to cities like Barcelona and Madrid, and seeing the enrormous Roman aqueducts in Segovia where apparently one of his sons was tasked with cutting the cochinero, a traditional suckling pig so tender that it is cut with the side of a plate. He did share one photo of the trip, and it was exactly as we imagined.
