RYLA: Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
This week at Rotary, Lexi Kantor gave an energetic and inspiring presentation about RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards a weekend-long leadership experience designed for high school sophomores and juniors. Hosted at Camp Rotary in Boxford, MA, RYLA brings together students from across the district to engage in intensive leadership development, team building, and personal growth.
Lexi shared how the program empowers students to become the best versions of themselves so they can, in turn, help their communities thrive. Through a combination of mindfulness, self-reflection, service-based learning, storytelling, art, and goal setting, RYLA creates unforgettable, transformative experiences. One of the weekend’s most memorable activities? A powerful board-breaking session that symbolizes breaking through personal barriers.
How You Can Help
RYLA’s biggest need is for Rotary Clubs to sponsor students from their communities. For just $375, a student can attend the full weekend program including meals, housing, supplies, and activities. Lexi encouraged clubs to work with local high schools and Interact Clubs to identify students. Once students apply through the central application, clubs receive those applications to review and select their delegate(s).
While this year’s participant slots are full, there are still many ways to support RYLA:
Your Donation in Action
$25–50: Session materials (notebooks, art supplies, team-building tools)
$125: Sponsor a facilitator or volunteer for a day
$150: Friday night board-breaking materials
$200: Fund a Family Leader training session
$300: Camp nurse for the weekend
$375: Full weekend sponsorship for a student, family leader, or advisor
$1,000: Participant t-shirts or ropes course facilitation by Camp Rotary staff

RI & District News
From Past District President Tom Hankard
As we all know, Rotary changes leadership yearly. But does it really? Every single day, each of us moves Rotary forward — whether by organizing another fundraiser to provide scholarships, having a conversation with a non-member about Rotary’s impact, or finding ways to maximize the effectiveness of our service projects.
We are all Rotary leaders — regardless of the date on the calendar or the title we hold.
In the past twelve months, we’ve increased Rotary’s positive impact in our communities, our nation, and around the world. It’s no secret that we live in a fractured society. But Rotary is a force that brings people — and the world — together.
When I visited your clubs last year, I asked you one simple question: Imagine your community without your Rotary Club. Who would provide the services your club delivers if we didn’t exist? How many people today might still have polio if Rotary had not stepped in?
Now, imagine the good Rotary will continue to do in the next twelve months, the next twelve years, and even the next twelve decades. It all starts with us — right now, today.
Serving as your District Governor and representing you locally and internationally has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I urge each of us to dig deeper and discover new ways to serve. Because without us, there is no Rotary, and where would the world be without Rotary?
Yours In Rotary Service,
Tom Hankard, your District Governor
Salem Rotarians Say . . .
Hannah Beth Hembree had an exciting couple of weeks. She recently went back down south for her bachelorette party weekend. She returned in time to help host the Salem Pantry's Impact Breakfast at the Hawthorne Hotel, raising over $15,000 during a Fund-a-Need!
Jason Consalvo played a round of golf at the Boys and Girls Club fundraising tournament at the Ferncroft. This came from a donation by the Salem Rotary Club. The Consalvo family also welcomed a new cat to the family.
Rinus Ooshtoek noted that there will be no Dutch Drinks this month due to the July 4 holiday. They may return in August, though he will be in the birthplace of Dutch Drinks, Holland.
