Salem Rotary hosted our first speaker of the 2021-2022 Rotary Year!
DAN FINAMORE
Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)
Dan Finamore, Associate Director for Exhibitions, The Russell W. Knight Curator of Maritime Art and History at the PEM gave Rotarians a sneak peek at the beautiful works of the “In American Waters” exhibit. For over 200 years, artists have been inspired to capture the beauty, violence, poetry and transformative power of the sea in American life. Oceans play a key role in American society no matter where we live, and the sea continues to inspire painters today to capture its mystery and power.
This exhibition goes beyond the paintings of whaling ships and what one may think of oceanic art. It captures how the ocean plays an interictal part of American culture with scenes and interpretations of the beach, the open sea, ports, and the people who visit the shore. Artists include, Georgia O’Keeffe, Amy Sherald, Kay WalkingStick, Norman Rockwell, Hale Woodruff, Paul Cadmus, Thomas Hart Benton, Jacob Lawrence, Valerie Hegarty, Stuart Davis, and many others. The presentation was enthralling, so it promises to be breath taking in person. The Exhibit runs through October 3rd so catch it while you can!

what the 4-way test means to me
Gerrit Bradley opened the meeting with his interpretation of the four-way test. He decided to go with the fourth principle of the test, “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Gerrit explained that his father has a neighbor in New Hampshire whose driveway produces a lot of water runoff into the driveway on Gerrit’s father’s property. This drives his father nuts! Gerrit, being the peacemaker he is, has decided that he will go over and bond with Monty, the neighbor, over a common interest: 3-D printing. Once Monty and Gerrit have discussed the topic, he will introduce the subject of the water concern and try to figure out what solution will be beneficial to all concerned. Gerrit has selected Adria Duijvesteijn to share next week.
Yours in service
Our Club had two service projects this week coordinated by the Service Projects Committee, which is led by Kristen Armstrong and Jane Stirgwolt.
ICE CREAM FOR
DCF FAMILIES
On Sunday, September 5, Rotarians Bob Anthony, Kristen Armstrong, Liz Bradt, Tim Clarke, and Jen Closevolunteered to hand out ice cream to DCF families and were rewarded with beautiful smiling faces. A big thank you to Carla King from DCF who organized the event for us, which included scheduling distribution sites throughout the North Shore.
LIFEBRIDGE DINNER
On Wednesday, September 8, our Club hosted the first Lifebridge Dinner of the Rotary year. Due to the Delta variant, these meals are still being prepared at home. Chefs Kristen Armstrong, Jen Close, and Jane Stirgwolt made breakfast for dinner, and Claire Kallelis helped deliver the food to Lifebridge for service. Keep an eye out for the next Lifebridge dinner and consider volunteering!
