HAPPY NEW YEAR!

President Elect Hannah Beth filled in for President Jason while he is on vacation this week. She did an amazing job and will be a great president next year!

Where Play Meets Possibility
Charity Lezama, Salem YMCA

Former Salem Rotarian Charity Lezama returned to the Club to share an exciting project at the Salem YMCA. The YMCA is taking an innovative step to address a growing need for local families by transforming its unused rooftop into a vibrant outdoor playground for children in its childcare programs.

Currently, more than 200 children enrolled in the YMCA's childcare programs do not have access to a dedicated outdoor play space. In a city where available land is limited, this rooftop transformation will provide a safe, engaging environment where children can learn, explore, and thrive every day.

Access to outdoor play is essential to healthy child development. Time spent outside encourages curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while supporting emotional well-being and reducing stress. Outdoor activity also helps children build strength, coordination, and lifelong healthy habits, while creating opportunities to develop teamwork, communication, and an appreciation for the natural world.

The rooftop playground will include:
•    Tricycle track
•    Climbing structures and play mounds
•    Multipurpose court
•    Children's bathrooms
•    Shade structures
•    Green spaces and gardens

The total investment for the project is $4.5 million. Thanks to strong early support, $3 million has already been secured through state capital grants, generous donors, and an investment from the YMCA of the North Shore. The remaining $1.5 million will be raised through a community capital campaign, of which they have $190,00 more to raise.

Supporters can help make this vision a reality by making a multi-year pledge, giving a one-time gift, recommending a grant through a Donor-Advised Fund, or taking advantage of an employer matching gift program.

More than a playground, this project represents a long-term investment in Salem's children, families, and future. By creating a dedicated outdoor space for play, learning, and connection, the Salem YMCA is reinforcing its commitment to youth development, health, and equity while ensuring every child has the opportunity to grow and succeed. For more information on how you can support this project, reach out to Charity.

The following are renderings of the new playground.

Visitors & Guests

Shawzy was back for another in-person visit before returning South.

We also welcomed Salem’s new Assistant Governor Phillip Zeissig of the Swampscott Club and prospective Rotarian, Angela Kolici from Eastern Bank.

Volunteer

Let’s not forget our motto, Service Above Self! The Community Service Committee is working hard this year to find more opportunities for Salem Rotarians to serve in our community. If you are new to the Club, this is a great way to engage with other Rotarians and the Salem community.

Our Club made another great meal at Lifebridge this week! Thanks to everyone who volunteered (including photographer Tim Clarke!)!

Salem 400+ Parade
Saturday, August 1 | 10 AM | Begins at SSU’s O’Keefe Parking Lot
Please let Club Leadership know if you are interested in taking the lead on a Salem Rotary presence in the Salem 400+ Heritage Days Parade on August 1. Ryan and Jen will be braving the high seas once again in the cardboard boat regatta following the parade!

DCF PICNIC
TBD | Plummer Youth Promise
Our DCF picnic is coming up in August. The DCF Picnic is an annual event put on by Salem Rotary to celebrate the foster families of the North Shore and to allow foster children the opportunity to interact with each other and often their siblings who are not able to be housed in the same foster home. This fun evening allows these children to be kids and enjoy many activities including a bounce house, outdoor games, a delicious BBQ and more. There are many ways to help! Volunteers are needed for setup, grilling, food distribution, fun facilitation, and cleanup. Watch the Spoke for more details, or email Hannah Beth Hembree if you’d like to volunteer!

CLUB NEWS & EVENTS

FÊTE EN BLANC SALEM
Saturday, July 18 | 5PM | Location TBD
The Salem Rotary Club is putting together a group for Fête en Blanc Salem, a free communal event inspired by the Paris and worldwide diner en blanc tradition that draws thousands of people every year. Attendees sign-up in advance to participate in a large communal pop-up dinner to be held in a public space in Salem. On the day of the event, registrants receive an email at noon telling them the location. At 5:00 and no earlier, diners arrive with the full complement of items needed for an elegant outdoor meal. RSVP to Jen Close if you are interested in attending so she can coordinate our group!

Salem Rotarians Say…

Adria Duijvesteijn announced that Salem State University will be hosting “A Conversation with President Barak Obama” as part of its Series on September 21. Tickets will go on sale on the university’s website on Wednesday, July 15 at 10 AM. Tickets are expected to sell out quickly, so the pro tip is to make sure your account to purchase tickets on the Series website is set up in advance and that you log in early!

Sue Gabriel shared that the Boys and Girls Club will be hosting a kickball tournament at the Salem 400+ Field Day at Forest River Park on Sunday, July 12 at 11 AM. Let her know if you have a team or would like to join one!

Rob Lutts shared news of his and Rachel’s first grandson! Their son Peter welcomed an adorable William James a few months ago. Rob is certainly smitten!

Jim Rose celebrated his 70th birthday on the same day as the country turned 250! Happy Birthday Jim!

Hannah Beth Hembree shared stories of her house renovations, noting that she and Phil opted to buy a house in lieu of a honeymoon! This summer’s doctor’s visit was due to a nail in the foot, but last summer’s bat adventure already had her prepped with a tetanus shot!

The meeting closed with tales of several recent Rotarian trips:

Gerrit Bradley joined high school buddies for an annual golf trip, this one marking the 20th anniversary of this adventure. The occasion called for a more adventurous adventure, and the group played golf in Ireland and Iceland, where Gerrit had his best day of golf and earned a coveted championship jacket from Filene’s Basement!

Liz Bradt shared that she camped in Acadia.

Natalie Blue may have used some of her recent Rotary Raffle winnings on a trip to the Jersey Shore with her kids, where they had a blast and her son started some college tours.
