REMINDER

The 2026 Salem Rotary Raffle Calendars are ready for pick up! If you haven’t gotten yours, they are waiting for you at the Hawthorne Hotel.

For those of you who are new to the calendar sales, each Salem Rotarian is asked to sell or purchase a minimum of 10 calendars (these calendars make great holiday gifts!). Calendars cost $20 each, and the bottom tab on the back of the calendar needs to be completed for the weekly calendar raffle.

Please return your all of your tabs with the funds collected at the same time, and by the beginning of January, so your calendar entries can be included in the raffle to win the weekly $100. The first draw from these calendars will be January 6.

Sandra Batakis Shares Five Moves to Reduce Risk and Headaches

At a recent Salem Rotary Club meeting, Sandra Batakis, CEO of Sandra Network, offered a straightforward look at how small and mid-sized businesses can strengthen their technology without getting lost in jargon. She opened with practical questions that every business owner should be able to answer: whether two-step sign-in is enabled for email, how long it would take to resume billing if a main computer failed, where backups actually live, and how quickly lost access to email would impact revenue. These questions highlighted a core theme of her talk: uncertainty around technology is itself a business risk.

Sandra emphasized that cybersecurity has become a survival issue, not an optional upgrade. Hackers do not target businesses because they are famous, she explained, but because they send invoices and cannot easily afford downtime. The most common attacks are remarkably simple, including fake invoices, stolen passwords, compromised email accounts, and ransomware. She described “good security” in plain language: using two-step sign-in across systems, having backups that can truly be restored, training staff to recognize unusual emails, and ensuring someone, internally or externally, pays attention to alerts.

She also addressed the rapid rise of AI tools in everyday business operations. When used carefully, AI can help draft customer emails, summarize long threads, or create a first pass at job postings or FAQs. Her caution was clear: businesses should avoid pasting sensitive information into public tools and always review AI-generated text before sending it. AI, she noted, should support decision-making, not replace it.

Sandra then turned to the role of cloud systems in modern operations. When configured correctly, the cloud can make work faster and safer by simplifying onboarding, reducing emergency IT issues, and allowing staff to access files securely from anywhere. She stressed, however, that the cloud is not automatically secure; it becomes secure only through proper setup and management.

Across her work with regional businesses, Sandra sees consistent priorities: predictable costs, fewer urgent problems, clear documentation of who has access to what, and reporting that shows genuine improvement over time. This shift toward managed, stable IT has replaced the old break-fix model for many organizations.

She closed by outlining a simple “tech health check” that encourages businesses to look at their authentication practices, password management, backup reliability, software updates, and their plan for handling incidents such as suspicious invoices or lost devices. Her final message was both realistic and encouraging: improvement doesn’t require an overhaul — choosing even one upgrade this month can materially strengthen a business.

Let’s not forget our motto, Service Above Self! The Community Service Committee is working hard this year to find more opportunities for Salem Rotarians to serve in our community.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE FRIENDS PROGRAM
Ongoing through December 12 (Flexible) | House of the Seven Gables
The House of the Seven Gables is seeking volunteers for its English Language Friends program! The goal of the program is to help students practice conversing in English outside of the classroom. Volunteers will be matched with 1-2 adult English-learning students.  After the initial meeting at our office, we ask volunteers to commit to 2 hours of English conversation per week from October 20 - December 12. You decide with your friends when and where to meet. Meet-ups can be a walk, over a coffee/tea, going to a park, etc. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Dakota Russell.

Salem Rotary Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Auction and Gala
Friday, March 13, 2026 | Hawthorne Hotel
As we prepare for this year’s Mad Hatter Tea Party Gala & Auction, we are excited to bring our community together for an evening of fun, creativity, and impact. One of the highlights of the night will be our auction, which helps raise the vital funds that fuel our Rotary Scholarship Fund. Together, we can make this auction unforgettable and raise the resources needed to continue the incredible work of Salem Rotary.  We are anticipating this to be a crowd drawing event, so be sure to get your tickets early and please share the event and ticket links on your social media platforms. Thank you for being part of the magic—we can’t wait to celebrate with you at the Mad Hatter Gala! Please let Jason Lang or Heather Lang know what you can contribute, or who we can reach out to, by February 1, 2026.
